On Thursday, March 16, the Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP) convened its first board of advisors meeting of 2023. SCSP Board of Advisors – Dr. Eric Schmidt, Dr. Nadia Schadlow, and Mac Thornberry – were joined by 40 of SCSP’s panel advisors and experts.
The first board meeting of 2023 focused on the one year commemoration since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the incredible innovation, courage, and determination of the Ukrainian people. SCSP’s advisors and experts examined recent changes in the geopolitical order and the latest technology developments with senior civilian and military leaders and leading technologists.
“In SCSP’s first board meeting of the year, we heard from both government and private sector experts on the latest developments in Ukraine and the competition with China,” said SCSP Chair Dr. Eric Schmidt. “Thursday’s conversations drove home the urgency with which the United States must organize itself for today’s dynamic technology competition in order to maintain its place as the leader in this space.”
The board also received briefings from senior government officials and private sector technologists, to include Deputy Assistant to the President and Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific Kurt Campbell, Editor and Chief of POLITICO Europe Jamil Anderlini, Senior Adviser for Cyber Security & China, IISS Nigel Inkster, U.S. Special Operations Commander Gen. Bryan P. Fenton, and Professor Emeritus at New York University Dr. Gary Marcus, on emerging lessons from the war in Ukraine and what those imply for future conflict, and the many implications of large language models for our society and economy. “SCSP’s continued discussions with senior government officials and private sector technologists is critical for us to align our work,” said SCSP President and CEO Ylli Bajraktari. “In 2023, we will continue our mission to develop a far-reaching vision and accompanying action plans to accelerate our nation’s competitiveness.”
SCSP staff will continue to engage with government, private sector, academia, civil society, and international partners (government & private) as it produces its action plans over the coming months.
