The Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP) released today the National Action Plan for U.S. Leadership in Advanced Networks. SCSP is developing a series of national action plans to establish U.S. leadership in key technology areas. This action plan identifies technology breakthroughs, organizational moves, incentive alignments, and policy levers that would position the United States and its allies and partners for global leadership in network technology out to 2030 and beyond.
The action plan’s purpose is to help the United States, along with its allies and partners, pursue game-changing technologies and leverage public-private funding, government procurement, and improved policies and industry coordination to produce advanced network hardware domestically, accelerate 5G/6G applications, and export trusted network technology and standards abroad.
“America must accelerate adoption of high-value 5G applications while also leading development of 6G and next-generation networks,” said SCSP Senior Director Liza Tobin. “We are in a crucial period where it is essential for the U.S. government and Americans to see technology more as an opportunity than a threat.”
“China has taken the lead in the first round of the 5G competition, but the race is just beginning to develop applications for 5G and advanced networks in autonomy, advanced manufacturing, and Internet of Things,” said SCSP’s Director of Economy Warren Wilson. “America and its allies must acknowledge the urgency of securing networks from PRC hardware-based risks.”
“The United States needs a national digital infrastructure strategy that prioritizes economic competitiveness,” said SCSP President & CEO, Ylli Bajraktari. “It is time for an American strategy that looks at long-term network planning for commercial and societal needs, in addition to household broadband access.”
